Magento isn’t for every store. We’ve told plenty of prospects, over the years, that they’d be better off on Shopify or WooCommerce — and we’ve built plenty of stores on those platforms ourselves. But when Magento is right, it’s really right. Here’s how to tell.
Magento is a good fit when
- You have a complex catalogue. Hundreds or thousands of SKUs, configurable products with many variants, bundles, virtual products, tiered pricing, customer-group-specific pricing. Magento’s catalogue model is genuinely powerful here in a way Shopify’s isn’t.
- You have B2B requirements. Account hierarchies, quote workflows, custom price lists, credit accounts, multiple buyers per account, custom catalogues per customer. Magento (especially Adobe Commerce) is built for this; most other platforms aren’t.
- You need deep integration. ERPs, custom warehouse systems, bespoke shipping calculators, punchout — Magento’s extensibility makes serious integration work practical in a way that’s painful or impossible on locked-down platforms.
- You want to own the codebase. Open source. Self-hosted. No platform fees on revenue. If you outgrow your agency or want to take it in-house, you can.
- You’re selling internationally. Multi-store, multi-website, multi-language, multi-currency — first-class features, not bolted-on.
Magento isn’t a good fit when
- You’re a small DTC brand with under 200 SKUs. You’ll probably ship faster and pay less on Shopify, and you won’t feel the constraints.
- You don’t want technical responsibility. Magento needs an agency or in-house dev. If you want to never touch the back end again, hosted platforms are easier.
- Your budget is below on requestk. A serious Magento build needs serious investment. Below that level, a Shopify or WooCommerce build will get you a better store for the money.
The honest summary
If you’re ambitious about ecommerce, doing real revenue or trying to, with a catalogue and process more complex than ‘sell a few t-shirts’ — Magento is probably the right answer. Anything else, talk to us; we’ll point you at the right platform even if it’s not the one we’d build for you.
